CCTV licensing in NSW: what every business owner needs to know before installing cameras

Hiring an unlicensed installer is a fast track to fines and uninsured liability. Here's how to check.

CCTV licensing in NSW: what every business owner needs to know before installing cameras

Installing, maintaining or monitoring CCTV and security alarm systems for commercial premises in NSW is a regulated industry under the Security Industry Act 1997. Before you hire anyone, you need to know the licensing requirements — or risk fines and uninsured liability.

The three-licence minimum

To legally sell, supply and install CCTV and alarm systems in NSW, a business typically must hold:

  • 01Class MB Security Master Licence — permits the company to operate as a security provider, hire security staff and contract for CCTV/alarm installation and monitoring.
  • 02Class 2B Security Licence — for sales staff who sell security equipment and provide advice on its use.
  • 03Class 2C Security Equipment Specialist Licence — for technicians who physically install, program and maintain the equipment.

Why this matters for end customers

  • 01Legal compliance: hiring an unlicensed provider can expose you to fines and legal consequences.
  • 02Quality assurance: licensed businesses meet government standards for training, background checks and operational procedures.
  • 03Insurance and liability: licensed security providers are far more likely to carry proper insurance coverage.
  • 04Accountability: if something goes wrong, you have legal recourse with a licensed operator.

How to verify a contractor

Customers can verify a security provider's credentials through the NSW Police SLED online register. Ask for the Master Licence number and check each installer's individual licence.

NSW Fair Trading separately licenses electrical work, so your CCTV installer should also hold a qualified supervisor certificate or electrical contractor licence for hard-wired systems.
